Button: More aggression needed in Belgium

Monday, August 24, 2009

With only six events remaining in the 2009 season, the tension continues to build race-by-race with only seven days separating the European and Belgian Grand Prix. After finishing seventh in Valencia, championship leader Jenson Button knows that more must be done in order to cement his first world title.

With Rubens Barrichello, Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber all having been second to Button throughout the season, it is once again the Englishman's team-mate who is the nearest challenger with only two races remaining on the European leg of the tour.

"It is better to be consistent and not crash but if you are consistent and get two points it is not enough," admitted Button, of Frome in Somerset, after Sunday's race in Spain. "I am going to go to Spa and be more aggressive, for sure - in every way, not just driving, but with the strategy and with the tyres."

Brawn finally outscored Constructors' Championship rivals Red Bull Racing on the streets of Valencia, having been caught by the Milton Keynes team since the British Grand Prix at Silverstone in mid-June.

"It's where we've got to be because, otherwise, it is going to be slowly eaten away," Brawn GP driver Button continued of his advantage, which is now 18 points over Barrichello. "It is a very difficult season this year because we have had some really poor weekends and some really strong weekends and this was the first time when we have had a strong car that I have not been able to get the most out of it - that is the most frustrating thing. We have to turn that around."

Jenson added that a good lap in qualifying on Saturday will ease the workload required in Sunday's 44-lap Grand Prix on what is the longest circuit on the calendar.
