Red Bull Racing experienced a day of ups and downs in Valencia on Friday as Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber finished second practice in the unexpected positions of ninth and fourteenth. As the championship battle with Brawn GP continues, both drivers are aware that car setups must be looked at for Saturday.
Vettel was the higher-placed of the duo all day in Spain with a top five result in the morning turning into ninth come the afternoon. "Today seemed to be okay," said the third-placed man in the championship. "There were no problems so we had a smooth Friday.
"I think we are more or less in the pack, but Fernando (Alonso) was very quick towards the end of the second session, which was a surprise. We need to improve for tomorrow so we will look at our day carefully and see where we were lacking compared to the others."
Mark Webber was slightly more frustrated with a lack of grip which left the Australian - currently the closest challenger to championship leader Jenson Button - eighth in the first session before dropping to fourteenth later in the day.
"We did a lot of laps today," said the Queanbeyan star, who circulated the street track 37 times. "We've got some good stuff to go through tonight and we did the tyre comparison, which was pretty straightforward. We've got some work to do this evening - this track is a little like Bahrain with walls!"
