No changes to 2010 points system

Thursday, August 20, 2009

The number of points scored will decide the 2010 championship instead of a wins-for-title system, it was confirmed in FIA sporting regulations released on Wednesday. The Formula One governing body released the rules ahead of next season to include a confirmation that no medals-like scheme will be put into place.

Much talked about earlier in the year, Bernie Ecclestone's proposed medals system had been imposed for 2009 before teams pointed out that, due to the late date of the change, all were in need to agree in order to allow the modification to take place.

With the FIA having stressed that the system would be put into place for 2010, however, the method would see podium finishers receive Olympic-style gold, silver and bronze awards with the receiver of most gold medals going on to claim the Drivers' title, meaning that the number of Grand Prix won would take priority over points scored over the course of the season.

In sporting regulations released by the FIA on Wednesday, though, the Paris-based federation confirmed that the current points system will remain in place next year. The top eight (10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1) scheme was first introduced in 2003 and would have changed a number of past championship outcomes had it been in place, including Eddie Irvine winning the 1999 Formula One title.
